This is a growing list. Please let me know other links that I need to include or suggestions for improvements.
National Ministries. The American Association of Christian Counselors, the National Association of Nouthetic Counselors, the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation, and Theophostic Ministries, all are national networks. They can help you find a counselor, but all of them have limitations, so use discernment.
A good site from which you can actually get a counseling referral online is Devotional Resources. Any of these resources, paired with my document on choosing a counselor can help save you a lot of trouble.
Counseling training. Two very good ministries are the Christian Counseling and Training Center and The Fathers House Healing Center (804-748-7444). The former has a five-year training program to certify you in biblical counseling. I find the first course to be the best Biblical Problem Solving. Beyond this, the programs strength is in the area of giving students a biblical grounding for counseling and in healthy biblical self-confrontation. The Fathers House, as well as Cornerstone Assembly of God and Christ Presbyterian Church use a 24-week course called Elijah House that is both biblically grounded and integrates prayer ministry into its training.
Parenting. It stirs up controversy in the Christian community, but the best parenting classes, bar none, is from Growing Families International. I have seen, both in my own children, and in the lives of scores of other kids, the measurable impact of a balanced implementation of this program. I have also seen almost uniformly difficult children come from homes that have not been exposed to this teaching. Thats my opinion. Take it for what its worth, and let me know if there are other good resources out there.
Marriage. Marriage Builders Alliance is a coalition of pastors around Richmond seeking to strengthen marriage by upholding a community marriage covenant, binding them to certain standards in relating to couples preparing to marry and those contemplating divorce. They also have some good seminars periodically, and have on hand resources and information for those seeking guidance in this arena.
Finding a congregation. Richmond Hill has the best database of local congregations online that you can search. Unfortunately, it does not help you pick a good one from a bad one. To help you choose, visit Christian Ministries United.
Volunteerism. Part of healthy functioning, especially Christians, is giving your time to others in need. Christian Ministries United does the best database of local ministries.
